ROLE IN NATIONAL NETWORKING ACTIVITIES

Centre for Information Technology (CIT)is the Unit of Bayero University Kano charged with the responsibility of providing ICT support to the entire staff and students of the University. I am the team lead in the Research and Development of the CIT. Basically I am to seek and recommend ways of improving on the current ICT drive of the University, that includes research on problems being encountered by the Network/Sysadmin team, create the solution and pass it onto the appropriate teams for onward deployment.

Bayero University Network comprises of five main campuses of the University connected via Nano station wireless bridges with the NOC at the CIT New campus. Each of these campuses have a comprehensive fibre backbone that link up the main buildings together. These buildings have twisted pair based LANs connected to the fibre end. At the NOC all connections terminate with several servers installed for providing various Intranet services. There is also a comprehensive wifi network that spans all these campuses making the entire University a hotspot. Authentication is being provided by mikrotic captive portal. The Internet services is provided via 2.4m podelin dish form a canadian ISP. This provides 3Mbps/1Mbps bandwidth that is shared by the entire University.

As I have been deployed to an area where I need to keep abreast with happenings in the IT world that will improve on the network services provided in the University, this knowledge I hope to gain will further actualize the dream of the university when they created the research arm in the CIT.

I have trained lots of people that we now have a robust network infrastructure unit in the CIT taking care of all our Network Implementation Internally.

I have been able to make neigbouring institutions to see the importance of being part of the community and participate actively in their activities. I have introduced such Institutions as Hussaini Adamu Polytechnic, Sa'adatu Rimi College of Education to start participating in our Local NOGs' activities. I have been able to convince my University to become an AFRINIC member.
